The Socio-Economics of Overcrowding workshop
Phil Hubbard attended the first workshop of "The Socio-Economics of Overcrowding" on February 17 and 18, 2025 in Berlin at Frei University. This project in Germany has similar intentions to our own, seeking to understand the demand for smaller homes, the trade-off between judgements of housing adequacy, affordability and availability, and the impact of living in overcrowded housing on residents. The workshop gave opportunity for us to share our methods and perspectives, emphasising the value of approaches which use actual floorspace data rather than simpler people:rooms ratio to establish overcrowding. We look forward to further conversations with the research team at Frei University as well as other contributors to the workshop, pictured in the attached closing photo.
